   Résumé
   Bella, jeune Londonienne de bonne famille dont la tante a été assassinée dans des conditions mystérieuses, épouse Paul Mallen, un séduisant étranger dont le comportement lui paraît de plus en plus bizarre: dénonçant comme absurdes ses inquiétudes et ses soupçons, il cherche à lui faire croire qu'elle est en train de devenir folle. L'homme est finalement démasqué comme le meurtrier de la tante dont il espérait trouver les bijoux dans le grenier de la maison.
   Commentaire
   Le film s'ouvre par une étonnante scène muette qui en donne le ton: la vieille femme est étranglée par un meurtrier qui reste invisible ; puis Bella est obsédée par les baisses répétées de l'intensité de l'éclairage au gaz lorsque son mari effectue ses vaines fouilles du grenier. Par sa qualité de suspense et d'atmosphère, le film s'est attiré un vif succès public qui a incité la M.G.M. à en produire un remake sous la direction de Cukor.
